Food
My mom’s side of the family is 100% German. I believe my great grandparents could speak fluent German and got in trouble for it at times. My dad’s side of the family is basically a mix of everything, but we’re pretty sure they’re from European region. Growing up, my family made this German dish called Beer Brats. It was a rare meal we would have when my grandparents would come to visit. I don’t think that it is a traditional German meal, but nonetheless it is made of two German food groups: beer and bratwurst.
Ingredients:
2 packages bratwurst
2 bags of hotdog buns
8 12oz. cans of any kind of beer
2 medium onions
1 jar sauerkraut
mustard (optional)
Preparation:
This dish needs to be prepared at least a day before you plan to serve it, because the brats soak in the beer overnight. Start off by emptying the brats into a large pot that has a lid to it. After that, empty the cans of beer on top of the brats so that they are completely covered. It may require all the cans and it might not, it really just depends on the size of the pot. Once that is done, slice the onions and place them in the pot as well. Place the lid on the pot and put it in the fridge overnight.
Cooking Directions:
Pull the pot with the lid still fastened on it out of the fridge and place it on the stove top. Bring to a boil and cook until the brats are half cooked, between 10 to 15 minutes. Take the pot off the heat and pull out the brats from the beer mixture. Do not get rid of the contents in the pot after removing the brats. Place the brats on the grill to finish cooking. In a different, smaller pot pour in the jar of sauerkraut and the onions from the beer mixture. Bring that to a boil. When the brats are done cooking place them in a bun and top with the sauerkraut mixture with mustard on top.
